Safe Vessel Transfers
📋 ASSESS: Preparation & Awareness
Before Every Transfer:
  • Consult the transfer method statement
  • Confirm weather and sea conditions are acceptable
  • Obtain Master approval before proceeding
  • Verify pilot ladder is correctly rigged and inspected
  • Establish communication with pilot boat crew
  • Ensure rescue equipment is ready and accessible
  • Brief all personnel and confirm fitness for transfer
Required PPE:
  • SOLAS-approved lifejacket or PFD
  • Safety helmet with chin strap secured
  • Non-slip safety footwear
  • Work gloves
  • AIS MOB / PLB (if issued)
  • Weather-appropriate protective clothing
NO PPE = NO TRANSFER
⚠️ DELIVER: Knowledge & Standards
Key Hazards to Manage:
  • Falling between pilot boat and vessel hull
  • Vessel movement due to swell, wake, or wash
  • Slips on wet or oily surfaces
  • Ladder failure or incorrect rigging
  • Crushing between vessel hulls during transfer
  • Poor weather conditions or reduced visibility
  • Fatigue or loss of balance
  • Inadequate communication between parties
IF IN DOUBT — STOP THE TRANSFER
REPORT: Action & Communication
During Transfer:
  • Only one person transfers at a time
  • Maintain three points of contact on ladder at all times
  • Face the ladder — never turn your back or sidestep
  • Move steadily and deliberately — do not rush
  • Follow all instructions from crew and pilot boat coxswain
  • Abort the transfer immediately if conditions change
After Transfer:
  • Confirm all personnel are safely onboard
  • Secure the pilot ladder and all equipment
  • Report any defects, damage, or near misses
  • Inform Master or Team Leader of the completion
