Vessel transfers are one of the highest-risk activities in maritime security operations. Every transfer requires proper preparation, the right PPE, and clear communication between all parties. No shortcuts. No exceptions.
Before Every Transfer
- Consult the transfer method statement
- Confirm weather and sea conditions
- Obtain Master approval before proceeding
- Verify pilot ladder rigged and inspected
- Establish comms with pilot boat crew
- Ensure rescue equipment ready
- Brief all personnel, confirm fitness
Required PPE
- SOLAS lifejacket or PFD
- Safety helmet (chin strap)
- Non-slip safety footwear
- Work gloves
- AIS MOB / PLB (if issued)
- Weather-appropriate clothing
No PPE = No Transfer. Do not begin without all equipment verified and fitted.
Key Hazards
Falling between boat and hull
Vessel movement from swell/wake
Slips on wet or oily surfaces
Ladder failure or incorrect rigging
Crushing between vessel hulls
Poor weather / reduced visibility

If in doubt — stop the transfer
During Transfer
- One person transfers at a time
- Three points of contact on ladder at all times
- Face the ladder — never turn your back
- Move steadily — do not rush
- Follow crew and coxswain instructions
- Abort immediately if conditions change
After Transfer
- Confirm all personnel safely onboard
- Secure pilot ladder and equipment
- Report any defects, damage, or near misses
- Inform Master or Team Leader of completion
